Food Fight! or Make Brian Eat This!

Thanks to last weekend's visit to the local market, we have our next mystery food item. As usual, use the comment field below to make your best guess!

Hints:
1. It can be cooked to make a strong, water-resistant glue.
2. When dried, it produces an ingredient used in the clarification of beer and wine.
3. Is considered a delicacy in Asia, served braised or in stews

If someone correctly identifies it (Hint #4-I'm counting on Bri's NEAq and UNE friends to know!), I'll actually buy some, make a soup, and make Brian eat it.

I'm no marine bio major... But even a PT picks up a thing or two living with a marine bio for 4 years! Sorry to do this to you Bri... but have fun eating all of those "swim bladders"!... or do you prefer the name fish maw... what ever you call them, they just look gross! Leslie, please include pictures of Bri attempting to choke down those delicious treats.

  2. So I'm going to have to go with swim bladders on this one. They look like they're filled with gas, dunno if that's right, but if you take one by itself and I could picture that sitting inside a fish...

hey, how bad could a swim bladder be to eat? I want to see Bri eat something gross! :)

  4. Bingo! I was beginning to think I'd stumped everyone! Either that, or Brian's friends are nicer than I am and are biting their tongues. Josh, you can bet on seeing pictures in the near future! Although, I think I'm equally as unsure about eating these. I've found lots of recipes though, and our Chinese teacher likes it....

  5. Jake, think Josh just beat you by a hair.... Your comments appeared as soon as I posted mine. Fitting that the two of you are responsible for Brian getting a lovely dinner of Fish Bladder Stew. Yum.

Wow, those look pretty disturbing! Good luck with that, Brian! I did eat a Chinese friend's fish stomach soup, but those weren't bad (it also included sea cucumbers... which she thought were a plant. oy!)
